Casa Zapote and the small village of San Miguel rest on the historic Mayan site of Tayasal, the last stronghold of the Itza people, who moved southward from Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula in the twelfth century. The Itzas founded the new city of Tayasal on the remains of Chal tun, an earlier Mayan settlement from the Classic period. Come stay at Casa Zapote and explore the fascinating art and culture that abound in this region rich in Mayan history.
