Takalik Maya Lodge
GuatemalaDescription
The hotel was once part of the main house on the coffee farm called Montes Eliseos, which is still used for the cultivation and processing of coffee as it has been for more than a century. The enormous water wheels on the farm were imported from England during the height of the coffee production in Guatemala, and they date back to 1880. These wheels are still used, but today they have been adapted to provide a clean, environmentally friendly energy alternative.
Upon visiting us, you will have the opportunity to combine an experience across the mysticism of the old Mayan culture, the diversity of the tropical rain forest and the friendliness of the local community in this Guatemalan coffee village.
The project is located over part of what once was the Mayan city of Tak'alik Abaj. Presently, it is the National Archeological Park of Tak'alik. This city was at its peak from the mid to the end of the Pre-Classical Period from 800 BC to 200 AD.
The location includes more than 230 sculptures, monuments, and altars. Many of these sculptures show the convergence of four styles: Maya, Barrigon, Olmeca and local. This cultural diversity makes this a unique and interesting place for lovers of the Mayan culture.
